Introduction to Fly-Tying

Catching a fish fooled by a fly that you tied can be one of the most rewarding of fishing pursuits.  This introduction to fly tying course is designed to teach the foundations needed to begin a lifetime of fly-tying and fly fishing.  Topics covered in this three week course include tool Selection, common fly-tying materials and their usage, how to start a fly kit, thread tips and tricks, fly durability, realistic fly tricks, and how to plan ahead to match the hatch.


Toolbelt

You don't need any tools or materials for our introduction course, but if you get, well... hooked, here's a list of tools to help you start your kit. 

Basics
-Fly tying vice - These can range from simple to exotic.  However, for a beginner, a vice can be purchased for under $40.
-Scissors
- Scissors with a micro tip are essential to fly tying.

-Bobbin
- Holds and tensions the thread.


Optional
-Hackle Pliers - Helps hold and position hackle when applying to a fly (great for those gorilla fingers)
-Hair Stacker
- Used to align hair used for some streamer, nymph, dry, and other hair flies.
-Dubbing Loop - Used for some advanced techniques.
-Tweezers/Foreceps
- Helpful for small tasks, and advanced techniques.

-Dubbing Pick/Needle
- A straightened big hook works for those on the cheap.

-Whip finish tool
- Aids in finishing flies, adds durability
